Alright Obama... Alright. |
Alright Obama... Alright. Crack Cocaine vs. Powder Cocaine. We all know by now that jail sentencing for the two are very different. For 5 grams of crack(the weight of 5 packets of sugar) one gets the same mandatory sentence as selling a half a kilo of powder(500 packets of sugar). For the longest time this has been one of the most unfair and quite frankly racist laws ever imposed on inner city folk. I say racist because it doesn't take a road scholar to see that Blacks and Hispanics populate the inner cities of America and interact far more often with crack than white folks who do not live there and interact with it. Enter Barack Obama(President Obama... Still having trouble believing this). Changing the unfair law between crack and powder has been a part of his Presidential bid in fact. Congress enacted the disparity during a so called crack epidemic in the 80's and now, along with subcommittee chair Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton the Obama administration is urging Congress to end the racial practice and equalize prison sentences for selling and using crack versus powdered cocaine. Along with the reduction of jail time for crack President Obama's administrators are looking to increase drug treatment and rehab programs for convicted felons after they get out of prison. Funny how no other president has ever even looked into this unfair practice let alone address it. Another burst bubble for the long standing "Powers That Be" and this is long overdue. I would like to formally thank President Obama for this most just act as Commander And Chief. The road to racial equality is indeed long and winding and make no mistake while we are finally making profound strides, we still have quite a ways to go. The uniqueness of a Black President has allowed this day to finally happen. Thank You so very much President Obama for continuing MLK's dream and making this country further live up to it's promise of liberty and justice for all.
